Race To Witch Mountain
The Rock is dead. But Dewayne Johnson is alive and well and quickly ascending to becoming
Hollywood’s biggest star. The former wrestler is now an A-list actor and on the fast track on
becoming the next Will Smith. Johnson puts his considerable amount of likability to the test by
starring in the bland Disney remake of the live action classic “Race to Witch Mountain.”
Admittedly the original (“Escape to Witch Mountain”) was sort of a clunker but the filmmakers do very
little in the improvement department. Instead they rely on Johnson to save the film with super corny
one-liners and his high voltage smile. How much you enjoy “Race to Witch Mountain” completely
depends on how much you enjoy watching Johnson. It’s all about him and he attempts to carry every
single second of this movie.
Johnson is a Las Vegas cab driver who enlists the help of a UFO expert (Carla Gugino) to protect two
siblings (AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig) with paranormal powers who unexpectedly end
up in his cab. What happens next is totally predictable as evil government officials chase the crew
around Las Vegas as they search for their spaceship to do an E.T. and head home. The unfortunate
thing for the viewer is the effects aren’t all that special. The movie actually looks dated and cheap. But
did I mention how much fun it is watching Johnson hams it up?
This sci-fi fantasy gets a bit loud and there are sequences of action and violence and dangerous
situations that could frighten young children. Overall “Race to Witch Mountain” is the type of harmless
family entertainment that put Disney’s live action camp on the map.
