Although almost every person loves to listen to music, most of us differ in the types of music that we listen to. Everyone of us listen to music for hours and hours each week.

Music is very powerful. Listening to music has many effects on us and we find our spirits lifted up, we experience relief from stress, and we simply enjoy singing with our favorite artists as we listen to the music that they play. While we do enjoy listening to certain music genres, most of us have not really taken time to know where these types of music came from.

Today, we have rap music which is the newest music genre which has become the most popular music genre today. A few decades ago, in the 60s and 70s, rap music was born in New York. This relatively new genre of music has become the most popular genre among music fans today. For every music minute this genre has a high rate of beats. The manner of speech in this type of music is also very fast. Staples of this genre include rhyming and wordplay. There are many popular rappers today. Gangster rap, mumble rap, dirty rap, etc. are the offshoots of this type of music.

Before rap came, rock was the most popular music genre. Rock music has its origins in African music. In the 50s and 60s, Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry included elements of blues, gospel, and soul music to give rock its signature sound in those days. Today, the signature sound of rock has changed from drum-centric to a primarily guitar-driven genre.

Another music genre is pop or popular music which is fun, upbeat music which appeals to a wide audience. Pop song are usually short, intentionally repetitive and rely on a chorus.

Heavy metal is a very misunderstood genre. It is looked upon as a loud, angry noise. However, this genre actually has its roots in blues and jazz music. The tritone known as the devil’s chord is used by these musicians to create a darker, heavier sound. Metal offers something for listeners of every type of music. Some have scary theatrical coating which owes much to disco and pop music. There are also metal styles that incorporate jazz fusion, classical, and rock elements.

We also have punk music that is on the other side of pop and rock. This type of music is a passionate guitar-drive music with fast beats per minute. It is intentionally off-putting and deliberately counter culture.
